El Guacio Christian Service Center was founded
in 1946 by Stan and Jeanne Harbison, who had just finished Stan's term
of alternate service (as a Conscientious Objector) in the Castañer
community on the boundary between Lares, Adjuntas, and Yauco. The original
intention of the Proyecto was to provide integrated services to one of
the most economically and socially depressed rural communities of Puerto
Rico. Over the years, the services have included dental and medical clinics,
distribution of materials for disposition of human wastes, literacy classes,
needlework and bamboo craft cooperatives, documentation for applicants
for Social Security, 4-H clubs, organized recreation support, as well as
traditional religious activities including Sunday School, Bible study,
marriages, baptisms, and evangelism programs.
